-FB-111A names
and nose-arts-
In the mid-eighties,
nose-arts appeared on the FB-111As from both wings. The
380th BW had the nose-arts painted on the right side behind
the cockpit while the 509th BW had theirs painted on the
nose wheel doors with details of the original a/c stenciled
beside it. Not all FBs carried nose-arts but were named and
over the years, the same nose-art and name appeared on
different aircraft for various reasons like Depot Level
maintenance, etc... Some FBs were even given nicknames by
their ground crews like a/c 68-0241 which used to be called
"K-Mart Special" (Two for one)!. Names were also given to
Wing's KC-135s in the same period. Prior to 1985, FB-111As
were also given special markings when participating in SAC's
competition and exercises.
Colonel Charlie Searock
was the wing commander at Plattsburgh AFB for two years
starting in May 1981. "We started yellow and blue horizontal
stripes on the vertical stabilizers at Plattsburgh in 1981.
The yellow and blue bands grew into nose-arts during the
spring of 1982 when I was determined to bring one of our
'hangar queens' (tail 247) out of 'cann' status and back on
the line. I assigned myself to that airplane. Had them put
my name on it and checked on it daily. Ultimately that led
to assigning crew members to aircraft in an attempt to
engender some more interest in the care and feeding of
'their' airplane. When 247 was finally rolled out, we named
it "Adam's Apple" and painted the now well known apple with
the sword stuck in it on the fuselage behind and slightly
below the cockpit. The name Adam came from my then nine year
old son named Adam. He would routinely accompany me on my
after hours rounds around the base and flight line. On many
occasions he would 'assist' the crew chief of 247 by holding
a flashlight or getting tools or whatever. The 'apple' came
from the area which of course was a major apple growing
region."
