Alert Daze

By James Bonno and Derrick Washington. (1988)

Sgt. Larson told me that Sgt. Mihm told him

That a letter came down from the D.C.M

That my jet was to pull alert for 90 days

I got pissed but there was nothing I could say

Jumped in my car and drove to barracks 50

Stuffed my pants, shirt , hat in my A-3

Rang my girl on the phone to say my last good-bye

The girl broke down and started to cry

As I told her this her heart fell

I said we can always talk at the D.L

As I walked to the gate I started to abort

What I thought was a prison was the sallyport

Put my bags in my room and took a look around

Then walked upstairs to the crew chief lounge

As I walked outside squinting at the sun

Took a deep breath and jumped into Alert 1

Shelters 1 & 2, holding 286 and 503

Crewed by the hard boys from R.E.D

Went out to my jet wondering what I will do

L.O.X , Carts or a free day I have no clue

In my alert dreams yes I must say

When I wake up Iíll have a free day

Weíve aired , L.O.X , cleaned carts canít do no more

Until the stupid ass tankers give up the mode 4

Mode 4 is keyed ops. cks. complete

We go inside for a bite to eat

Chillíin in the t.v room with some popcorn

Jumped out of my seat because I heard the horn

Running down the tunnel saying this shit sucks

Looking in the distance for my sortie truck

Listen homeboy as I hear the klaxon

Sitting in my truck Iím ready for some action

The cop is at my shelter when I arrive

He flashes 1 , I flash him 4 the code is 5

Jumped in my shelter I have no fear

Protecting my country from the Russian Bear

Smoke in my eyes , sulfur giving me thirst

Pumping it , pushing it to get out first

I get out first and what do you know

This thing is for real the jet is about to go

Soon my jet will be dilly, dally

Going mach through the valley

Then Gorbachev cried through his Russian eyes

And said these words to no surprise

Itís all because of you

Iím feeling sad and blue

You dropped a nuke

Now my pants are filled with doo-doo

Back in the states Iím chillíin on the flight line

Deciding whether to get laid, get drunk or bust another rhyme

Thinking about alert it is filled with haze

But time spent there were the best days
